ROUTE

See hike 55 for the description. About an hour (1¼ miles) S from the power station, go right (S) at the fork opposite the steep trail to Blue or Mud Lakes, and hike ½ mile up to the next fork at 11,800 feet. Stay to the right ½ mile (SSW, then SE) on the main trail, following the old road up to some small ponds. A couple hundred feet before the ponds (NW), a post marks the path SW up to the Blixt Road and a great Loop into Bear Creek for another time. Walk between the ponds, and go S ¼ mile up Bridal Veil Creek to the mill and the decent little shelter above Lewis Mine. (Please be respectful.)

To continue to Lewis Lake, climb the steep drainage gully to the left (E) from the little shelter and right (W) of the creek, going S a couple hundred yards up the solid scree trail if snow isn’t covering it. The trail ends at the dammed end of the largest of ten other high alpine lakes and ponds in this pristine area. It might be best not to go into the lakes themselves, as you will turn hypothermic more quickly than you thought possible! Hike 30 minutes and ½ mile more to the saddle S (Lewis Lake Pass, 13,058 feet) to see Columbine Lake (hike 80) and more of the San Juans. Simply walk SSE past Lewis Lake through the rock meadow to the end of the basin, turn left (NE) a few hundred feet, and go right (S) on the switchback up the visible, solid rock path ¼ mile to the pass.
